Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Tajikistan

Modern Challenges and the Importance of Vigilance

In recent years, the world has become increasingly unstable. The process of reshaping spheres of influence is intensifying, and a new stage of the “cold war” is emerging. Modern threats such as terrorism, extremism, illegal arms trade, cybercrime, and other forms of international organized crime are growing ever more dangerous.

In such conditions, every conscious citizen, especially military personnel and law enforcement officers, must maintain political vigilance. The greatest value of our people is independence and freedom, the security of society and the state, peace, stability, and national unity.

🗣 “I believe in the courage, bravery, high national spirit, and passionate patriotism of the proudly determined officers and soldiers of the homeland, and I am proud of them.”
— Emomali Rahmon

The History of the Holiday

In Tajikistan, February 23 marks two significant events:

  • Armed Forces Day
  • Defender of the Fatherland Day

This holiday has almost a century-long history. In 1918, exactly one year after the formation of the Red Army, its soldiers achieved their first victories near Pskov and Narva. Since 1922, February 23 has been the official Day of the Soviet Army and Navy.

After the collapse of the USSR, the holiday gained a new meaning. Now, February 23 is the day of true men, a symbol of military honor and devotion to one’s homeland.

The Formation of the Armed Forces of Tajikistan

📜 December 18, 1992, President Emomali Rahmon signed a Decree on the formation of the National Army. This marked the first step in establishing the sovereign Armed Forces of Tajikistan.

📅 February 23, 1993, the first military parade took place on Dusti Square in Dushanbe, marking the birth of the National Army.

⚔️ In April 1994, the Armed Forces of the republic were officially formed. Since then, February 23 has been a double holiday:

  • Defender of the Fatherland Day
  • The Day of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Tajikistan
